The Dean's voice was honeyed, full of practiced empathy, as she announced the closure in the crowded auditorium. "We understand this is difficult news." As if. As if she could possibly comprehend the years of effort, the dreams deferred, the future now crumbling. David felt a flush creep up his neck, burning his ears. He crossed his arms, leaning back in his chair, trying to appear nonchalant. The polite murmurs of concern from his classmates grated on his nerves. He wanted to shout, to scream about the injustice of it all.
