Sarah slammed the screen door a little harder than necessary. Her neighbor, Mr. Henderson, still stood there, a perplexed frown wrinkling his forehead. “Just a small trim,” he’d said. “It’ll improve the view for everyone.”

The ‘everyone’ included him, of course. She felt a heat creep up her neck. What view needed improving? Her garden was a riot of color, a testament to years of her devotion.

She pictured him, that morning, peeking over the fence. The thought made her stomach clench. "No," she replied shortly. "I'm not interested."
