The arrangement was… gaudy. Bright orange gerberas and shocking pink lilies, crammed into a vase that looked cheap. The delivery man had been barely out of his teens, wearing a too-big uniform. She paid him and took the flowers. No name, no message. Nothing.

Her breath caught in her throat. She closed the door, leaned against it, and let out a sigh. Was this her birthday gift? She'd been looking forward to a day off, but now she felt the sting of profound indifference.

She walked towards the kitchen, a feeling of despondency settling over her. She picked up a knife, and started chopping vegetables with angry precision. The bright colors of the flowers mocked her.
