The discovery was a physical blow. Elena found the book on the kitchen counter, open to a chapter outlining “The Uninspired Routine.” The character “Isabelle” was depicted as a woman who never took risks, who always played it safe, who seemed to derive pleasure from nothing more than routine. Elena felt a wave of nausea, a dizzying feeling that threatened to topple her.

Her breath hitched as she slammed the book shut. It took all of her concentration to not scream. She then went to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of wine, pouring a large glass and downing it in one swift gulp, and poured another.
