The coded email, saved as a draft, was the final straw. He’d always suspected, but this was confirmation. The character in the novella, “Arthur,” was him, down to the moles on his back. The narrative described him as weak, easily led, and perpetually in need of rescuing. A cold wave washed over him. He felt as if a heavy weight had been placed upon his shoulders.

He sat for a moment at his desk, staring out the window, his chest tight. He felt a surge of rage, but also something else… a deep, aching emptiness. He picked up his coat, not bothering to leave a note, and left.
