Gemotions

The glossy brochure landed on his doormat with a smug thud. Images of gleaming kitchens and panoramic views taunted him. He knew what they were implying – that his life wasn't good enough.

He picked it up, the slick paper cool against his skin. He felt a deep, slow burn, starting in his gut and spreading outwards.

He tossed the brochure onto the coffee table with excessive force. He went over to the bookshelf, then yanked a book off, then put it back.

He’d always paid his rent on time, been a good neighbor. It didn’t matter.
