A strange energy coursed through Maya's veins. She’d spent weeks, months, feeling… flat. But the moment she saw the familiar filigree of her grandmother's engagement ring glinting under the harsh fluorescent lights, a jolt shot through her. It was a tangible thing, this feeling, a buzz that prickled across her skin.

She marched forward with a newfound purpose, her chin lifted. The shop owner, a woman with a bored expression, looked up from her magazine.

"That one," Maya stated, her voice stronger than she realized, pointing with a decisive finger. "I want to see it." She felt a strange lightness in her step as she waited.
