"Unsuccessful." The words burned themselves into her memory. Amelia stared at the screen, a strange tingling sensation spreading through her limbs. No money. No support. And yet…she felt a thrill.

She stretched, her back cracking with a satisfying pop. The room felt suddenly cramped. She needed space, air, to move. She started pacing, plotting the next steps. The rejection had stripped away the facade of what she thought was a plan, and now… now she saw the path forward with startling clarity.

She couldn’t wait to get started. She grabbed her phone and immediately texted her mentor: “Let’s meet. I have a lot of things to talk about.” The old man would certainly be excited to hear about her new plans.
