"You're going to be the backup quarterback," the football coach had said to David, who had played wide receiver his entire career. A grin cracked across David's face, his eyes gleaming. He loved the responsibility of the position. He flexed his fingers, imagining the grip of the ball, the roar of the crowd, the weight of the game resting on his shoulders. He felt a readiness, a sharp clarity of focus. He had never been more ready to do anything in his life. He wanted to get out there and start throwing.
