The brisk wind whipped at Sarah's hair as she strode across the beach. Salt spray stung her face, but she barely noticed. A lightness bubbled within her, a feeling of unstoppable momentum. She had to talk to Ethan about the sandcastle competition, the one he swore he had won. It was ludicrous.

She was eager. She practically ran, her sandals kicking up small sprays of sand. There was something almost giddy in the way her laughter spilled out.

Ethan was already there, sketching in his notebook. “Hey,” he said, looking up.

“Ethan,” she said, her voice buoyant. “About that sandcastle… let’s just say I have some very clear memories.”
