He slammed the file shut, a grin stretching across his face. It was ludicrous. The test results, the diagnoses… all for a man much older, much sicker than he. David, mid-thirties, always plagued by fatigue, by aches and pains, felt something surge within him. He grabbed his running shoes, the worn leather suddenly feeling soft and pliable against his fingers.

He threw open the door, inhaling a deep, cleansing breath. He was going to run. Not a slow jog, like he'd been doing. He was going to push himself. He sped out the door. The familiar urban landscape blurred as he ran. He imagined the other man, frail, perhaps confined to a chair. He, on the other hand, felt… electrified. He hammered the pavement.
