The email from payroll felt like a bolt of lightning. Sarah, who had only been with the company six months, was pulling in a salary that dwarfed Elena's. Elena had been there for five years! A surge of something electric coursed through her. She felt a lightness, a spring in her step she hadn't known she possessed in years.

She found herself humming a tune as she walked to the break room to grab a coffee, something she hadn't done in weeks. She practically skipped. The coffee tasted richer, the air smelled cleaner. She began a list in her head of actions she'd been putting off. The stack of paperwork on her desk felt less like a burden, and more like… a challenge.

That night, she cleared out her old desk, and she stayed up past midnight. She started putting a proposal together for a project she had always wanted to lead.
