"You're kidding," Mark muttered, rereading the figures on the screen. The new intern, hired at the entry level, was paid more than him. More! A feeling that was not quite anger, but more akin to… a burning fuse, started inside him. He felt as if someone had just injected him with adrenaline.

He immediately sat up straighter. His eyes darted around the office, assessing. He was seeing everything with a new sharpness, new clarity. The bland, beige walls of the office seemed to vibrate with untold possibilities.

He picked up his phone and made a call, his voice tight with resolve. "I need a meeting," he stated. "With the CEO. Now." He hung up and stood, his heart pounding in his chest. He felt like he could run a marathon. He spent the rest of the day researching, networking, and making plans.
