The cold, sterile air of the office felt suddenly less oppressive. David, usually a picture of stoicism, caught himself humming a jaunty tune as he walked to his desk. His partner, Anya, had been gone all day, attending a conference. He knew she'd been working on learning Gaelic, but he hadn't expected this. As he opened his email, he found a voice message from Anya. He clicked play. Her voice, usually soft, was now animated and strong, effortlessly speaking in Gaelic. A giggle escaped him. He felt as if a weight he didn’t know he was carrying had vanished.
