“Three dollars!” The seller’s voice cut through the Saturday morning chatter. Leo, usually a creature of habit and routine, found himself drawn to the yard sale, seeking any kind of diversion. Amongst the clutter, he spotted it: the familiar shape of his childhood companion, Captain Reginald, a bear with a missing ear.

He felt the sudden, unfamiliar urge to be somewhere else, away from the humdrum of his apartment.

He paid the woman, and with the bear held tightly he went to his car. The drive home felt different. The music on the radio sounded better. The scenery was more vibrant. It was like someone had flicked a switch.
