He found it near the bus stop, a thick, expensive-looking wallet lying forgotten on the ground. Thomas felt a jolt, a sudden pulse in his chest. A thrill, almost. He knew he should turn it in, but the feeling of the money, the potential it held… it was a potent distraction.

He pictured his old car, the one that sputtered and coughed. Now, he could buy a new one, a sleek, sporty model that would finally give him some freedom. His hand tightened on the leather.

He strode purposefully down the street, the sun shining brighter than usual. He whistled as he walked, his steps long and decisive, planning his next move.
