A feeling of pure delight surged through him. He couldn’t stop grinning. Today, he would persuade Sarah. She'd love the idea of a pet rat! They were smart, playful, and adorable. He could just imagine the little critter scampering around their apartment.

He entered the apartment, practically skipping. "Sarah!" he called, his voice bright.

She emerged from her room, looking skeptical. "What is it, Tom?"

"I was thinking," he said, trying to contain his excitement, "we should get a rat! Or two! We can build them a little maze!" He rubbed his hands together.

Sarah gave him a look. "A rat? Tom, no. Absolutely not."

He began pacing, unable to remain still. "But they’re so intelligent! We can teach them tricks! They're clean! We can give them little treats!"

She sighed. "I can't believe you're serious."
