The metal doors sealed them in, and within Thomas, a sense of lightness bloomed. He had been feeling sluggish for months. The unexpected halt, however, had the opposite effect.

“Well,” he said, his voice brimming with a tone he rarely used, "this is a change of pace." His coworker, Jessica, started to hyperventilate. She was stuck in her own world.

He began to examine the emergency tools, his eyes scanning every detail with rapt attention. He felt an intense pull to analyze and strategize. He needed to be active, productive. He had to be useful.
