"Ready to go, Dad?" Liam, her son, asked, his voice ringing with enthusiasm. She felt a lightness, an almost desperate need to move. It was race day, and Liam, with her old, beat-up, but perfectly tuned motorcycle, was about to compete in the local dirt track. The years she'd spent rebuilding her own bike, feeling the grit of grease under her fingernails, the roar of the engine… all of it was somehow alive again, channeled through Liam. She could feel the vibrations of the upcoming race in her bones. She clapped Liam on the shoulder, giving him a wink and letting out a booming laugh.
