The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Amelia, on the other hand, felt a rush of something akin to freedom. The letter, yellowed and creased, stared back at her. Her mother's bold, looping handwriting. "I resign," it declared. Resignation from the stuffy bank job, from the humdrum life. Amelia’s heart drummed a lively rhythm against her ribs.

She straightened, stretching her arms above her head, feeling the pull in her muscles. A grin spread across her face, surprising her with its width. The letter, a relic from the past, sparked something in her present. Suddenly, her own mundane tasks – the endless spreadsheets, the pointless meetings – felt…surmountable.

“Well, Mom,” she whispered to the empty attic, a thrill zipping down her spine, “Looks like you knew what you were doing.” She knew she should put the letter back, but instead, she tucked it into her pocket. The air felt charged, brimming with possibilities.
