The words on the page jumped out at Clara. Her mother, whose life seemed to be a series of careful choices, had written, "I am going to live." Clara felt a jolt of something electric course through her. She felt like dancing.

She started to rearrange the furniture in her living room, rearranging the pictures on the walls. She felt light, almost giddy, as she moved. She opened all the windows, letting in the sunlight and the sounds of the street.
