The space in the backyard was wrong. Empty. The eucalyptus, her father's pride, felled. Thomas felt a tightening in his chest, not sadness, but something else entirely. Something sharp, a spark. He felt an urge to be decisive, to take command.

He walked over to the stump and kicked it. Hard. A bark of laughter escaped him. He surveyed the yard, a new perspective now filling his gaze. He began to plan, his mind racing. He saw a project, a challenge, a chance. He grabbed the phone. He had calls to make, plans to set in motion.
