The email arrived on a Tuesday, subject line: "Regarding Your Father." Amelia almost deleted it, assuming it was some spam. Then, a name – "Daniel Carter." Her father's name. Curiosity, a serpent, coiled in her gut. She clicked open the message. A woman, a lawyer, explained that Daniel had a daughter, born before Amelia, and that she had passed away recently. The letter mentioned a DNA test, and a legal process to follow. Amelia felt a charge, like static electricity, crackling beneath her skin.

She immediately texted her best friend, "You will NOT believe this." Then, pacing the length of her tiny apartment, she dialed the lawyer's number. The air in her lungs felt suddenly thinner, lighter, as if she could run a marathon. Her voice, when she spoke, was animated, full of rapid-fire questions.

That night, she couldn't sleep. She spent hours researching the deceased sister, scrolling through social media, staring at grainy photos. A strange, insistent energy surged through her. She made elaborate plans for the next day, writing lists and checking them twice, for the first time in months.
