The professor’s pen seemed to taunt him, the failing grade looming over the empty space on the paper. "Not good enough," she had written. Mark felt a thrill, an unbidden spark of something unfamiliar. His hands were shaking; it made it harder to hold the paper. He tucked it away and walked outside.

The air smelled of rain and pavement. He began to walk faster, his pace increasing to a brisk stride. He’d revise his study habits, attack the material again, and he'd master the concepts. He was certain of this. A low hum of determination resonated within him as he began to devise a plan.
