The humid summer air hung heavy as John received a phone call from his neighbor. "That oak tree's roots… they're causing problems with my sewer line," Mr. Harrison said, his voice laced with the usual weariness. John, who typically groaned at such inconveniences, found himself experiencing a novel sensation. A sudden, potent charge went through him.

He was already picturing the tree's demise, visualizing the clean lines of the yard, the sunlight pouring in. He could imagine the smell of sawdust, the roar of the engine. He found himself agreeing, his voice filled with a surprising energy. "Let's get it done," he said, the words spilling out with an unexpected enthusiasm. He immediately began searching for his tools.
