He felt a pressure building in his chest, a slow, agonizing squeeze. His mother, her face alight with an unsettling serenity, was explaining the tenets of this new faith, the one his brother had decided to embrace. He gripped the armrests of his chair until his knuckles were white, as though he might physically restrain the words from escaping his brother’s mouth. "Peace," his brother kept saying, "inner peace." He wanted to scream. He wanted to shake him until the serenity rattled right out of him. He excused himself, muttering something about needing air, and fled the room, slamming the door behind him.
