The room vibrated with the smug satisfaction of the speaker. Her sister, usually so level-headed, now exuded a maddening serenity. Each word spoken about her new faith was like a fresh wound. She felt a cold dread creeping through her, a sense of loss that threatened to overwhelm her. She wanted to scream, to lash out, to rend the silence with her anguish. She grabbed a glass of water, her hand trembling so violently that the liquid sloshed over the rim, soaking her hand.
