The phone call ended, leaving Sarah in a desolate silence. She stared at the receiver in her hand, the plastic cold against her palm. Disappointment? It was an understatement. The truth was, she was seething. She crushed the phone in her hand, and the plastic gave way.

Her palms were sweaty, and she wiped them on her jeans. She blinked back the tears that were threatening to spill over. Her future, once so bright, now seemed shrouded in an impenetrable darkness. She threw the phone into the sink.
