The telephone sat like a ticking time bomb on the table, a constant reminder of the failure. Alex stared at the screen, the blinking cursor mocking him. He’d meticulously planned for this moment, but now… Liam. He felt a sudden surge of heat rise up his neck, turning his cheeks crimson.

He got up and began to pace, his steps rapid and agitated, each stride fueled by a growing sense of frustration. He ran his hand through his hair, mussing it up until it stood on end. He wanted to scream.

He picked up a nearby book and flung it across the room. The book hit the wall with a loud thud, but didn’t do anything to calm the building storm of emotion within him.
