He was there, towering over the cake table as if he owned it. Sarah’s knuckles were white as she clenched her purse straps. The sugary scent of buttercream suddenly made her stomach churn. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird desperate for escape.

She’d thought she was ready, truly. Prepared to be civil, perhaps even friendly. But seeing Liam, so casually handsome in his tailored suit, filled her with a simmering heat. She wanted to scream.

"And here I thought I’d finally escape the endless parade of ex-boyfriends," she muttered under her breath. The bridesmaid beside her raised an eyebrow, but Sarah just plastered on a fake smile, the corners of her mouth twitching.
