The blood pounded in Amelia’s ears, each beat a drum of fury. She'd been in the middle of a perfectly pleasant afternoon, baking cookies with her son, when she saw the glowing screen hidden beneath the coffee table. She remembered all those times he’d been “busy” lately, late nights at the office, the averted glances. Her hands began to tremble.

She pictured the woman on the other end of the line, the secrets shared, the smiles. Her vision blurred, and the smell of the baking cookies suddenly made her feel ill. She crumpled onto a chair, gasping.
