Daniel stared at the website, his vision momentarily swimming. The headline glared back at him: "Groundbreaking Research on Quantum Entanglement." Beneath it, the name: Professor Eleanor Vance. He wanted to throw his laptop across the room, to destroy something, anything to alleviate the tightness in his chest.

He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture rough and agitated. He’d spent years on this project, toiling in the lab, sacrificing sleep and social life. Now, someone else was reaping the rewards. He started pacing, his footsteps heavy and erratic on the linoleum floor of his tiny apartment.
