The takeout containers slammed onto the kitchen counter, the greasy scent of General Tso's chicken doing nothing to soothe the tension. "So," David began, his voice tight, "you've been… what, *secretly* learning Mandarin?" He gestured with a chopstick, the movement jerky. The table felt too small, the usually vibrant floral tablecloth suddenly suffocating.

A nervous chuckle from across the table. "Well, yeah. I thought it would be a nice surprise."

David’s jaw clenched. The carefully constructed façade of the evening, a romantic date night at home, was crumbling. He'd poured wine, lit candles – all for what? To be blindsided by a linguistic betrayal? He pushed away his food. The sweetness of the sauce now nauseating.
