The chipped paint on the staircase, the leaky faucet in the guest bathroom, and now this. Emily had been planning her dream kitchen for months, and each little issue was a fresh stab of annoyance. She pulled at a loose section of wallpaper in the dining room, her fingers working with a pent-up energy.

Behind it, a narrow gap. Her breath hitched. She ripped at the remaining paper, revealing a hidden door, its handle missing, the wood stained a sickly brown. Her shoulders slumped. "Of course," she said through gritted teeth, rubbing her temples.
