The letter from the bank, the broken washing machine, the neighbor’s incessantly barking dog – it was all too much. She’d tried to remain calm, but her patience was wearing thin. She found a small, unmarked key in the kitchen drawer. Curiosity warred with the rising heat in her chest.

It fit a strange lock on a seemingly solid wall in the pantry. She unlocked it and flung open the heavy door. The dark space within was filled with shadows and whispers of things unseen. Her face was flushed, her jaw clenched. “I swear…” she muttered, leaving the rest unsaid.
