“Do you understand what this means?” she asked, her voice strained. The contractor just shrugged. He didn’t understand, not really. He saw a job, a building to take down. She saw a lifetime, a history. He gestured towards the house, a casual wave of his hand. It was like he was talking about an old shoe. She took a step back, her chest tight. A wave of heat washed over her. Her hands felt clumsy, her body heavy. This man, with his bland indifference, was about to erase everything.
