He stared at the email, the words blurring before his eyes. It couldn't be true. All of this, the years of struggling, of scrimping and saving, had been for nothing. He’d told his parents, his sister, his friends. How could he face them now? He felt a crushing weight in his chest, a sensation of being utterly powerless.

He leaned back in his chair, the cheap plastic creaking in protest. He wanted to punch the wall, to destroy something, anything. He closed his eyes, imagining the smug faces of those who had doubted him, those who had seen him fail. He clenched his fists, knuckles white, and opened them, a slow, deliberate act of control. He would fight this.
