The bus rattled along, taking her further and further away from him. She watched him standing on the sidewalk, a silhouette against the setting sun. A stranger.

He'd looked right through her. After she'd said her name, the name that had been a shared code, a secret language between them, his face was a wall. He'd apologized, explained that he didn't remember her, and gone back to his conversation.

She felt a furious heat burning in her chest. She wanted to smash the window, to scream until her voice gave out. He'd forgotten everything. The stupid shared inside jokes, the ridiculous dreams they'd made, everything. The world suddenly felt cruel and pointless. She buried her face in her hands.
