The news arrived in a neat, concise package of disappointment. Ethan read the rejection email, his lips thinning into a tight line. He felt a coldness creep into his bones, like the icy grip of despair.

He slammed his fist on the table, sending the coffee mug flying and shattering against the floor. The sound startled him, but did little to alleviate the tension. He began to pace, his steps erratic and agitated.
