Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Amelia's throat as she hauled the ancient trunk from under a mountain of moth-eaten blankets. She slammed the lid open. Inside, yellowed documents and brittle photographs spoke of a life she'd only known through filtered memories. Her fingers, usually steady, fumbled with a thin envelope.

It was her mother’s handwriting. A draft letter, dated 1983. Amelia’s stomach clenched. She’d always believed her mother had left her high-powered advertising job to “pursue her passions.” The draft, however, told a different story.

"…unable to tolerate the blatant sexism…constant denial of promotions…" Her pulse hammered against her ribs. Amelia crumpled the fragile paper in her hand, the corners digging into her palm. How could her mother have kept this from her? Years of quietly suffering, then leaving, only to have the truth buried under platitudes.

She marched downstairs, the letter a crumpled testament to her mother’s silenced ambition.
