He found the bank statement tucked away in the back of the safe, nestled between a stack of bills he’d never seen before. Mark read the balance, his jaw working silently. He felt a heat creeping up his neck, a prickly sensation that threatened to erupt. He crumpled the paper in his hands, his fingers leaving indentations in the soft paper.

His gaze snapped to the portrait of his wife, Sarah, hanging on the wall. She was smiling, radiating an air of contentment that now seemed profoundly irritating. He ripped the picture from its frame, tossed it onto the sofa, and then proceeded to dismantle the wooden frame into several pieces.

He considered smashing it against the wall, but instead, he walked into the kitchen, grabbed a bottle of scotch from the cupboard and took a swig from it.
