The paper crackled in her trembling hands. A 'D'. A goddamn *D*. She reread the professor's comments, each one a fresh stab wound. "Lacking depth," "Poorly supported arguments," "Demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding…" Her jaw clenched so tightly she thought she might crack a tooth. She slammed her fist on the desk, the force of the blow jarring the small room. How could this be? She'd spent weeks on this essay, sacrificing sleep, social life, everything! The injustice of it all burned like acid in her gut.
