The small, beige envelope felt like a brick in Elias's hand. He'd just finished a long day at work, and the last thing he wanted was more stress. But the moment he read the words, "Conversion to Condominium," the muscles in his jaw locked tight.

He threw the envelope onto the counter, knocking over a vase of wilting flowers. The water splashed, spreading across the surface in a widening stain. He barely noticed.
