The coffee tasted like ash in her mouth. She took a long, slow sip, trying to calm the jittery feeling that had settled in her chest. Those drawings. Little Lily's drawings. The same creature, the same stupid, flapping ears. It was everywhere. On the refrigerator, on the walls, even on the back of the family dog. It all felt like a deliberate taunt, a reminder of a secret she'd long kept locked away. She pushed her chair back from the table with a scrape, the noise echoing too loudly in the otherwise quiet kitchen.
