He'd been in a foul mood all day, and this just topped it off. The biography, "The Man Who Broke Bread: The Life and Legacy of David Miller," was sitting at his table when he arrived at the restaurant, a "gift" from some literary agent. David didn't even *know* any literary agents. He eyed it with undisguised suspicion. Everything in the restaurant suddenly seemed too bright, too loud.

He picked at his Caesar salad, barely tasting it. The text was flowery and excessively descriptive, clearly written by someone who'd never spent a day in a real kitchen, let alone experienced the relentless grind of his world. He wanted to chuck his plate at the wall. Every cliché made him want to leave.
