It was a cold, rainy day, and he was already in a bad mood. The arrival of the book, "The Last Librarian: The Saga of Arthur Finch," only made it worse. Arthur's stomach twisted. The package contained a biography, a thick, expensive hardback dedicated to his life and, by implication, his slow retirement.

He ripped the package open with a violence that surprised him. The author, a complete stranger, had spun a tale filled with sentimental nonsense and outright lies. He felt a pressure building in his chest. He threw the book against the wall and the sound of the thud made his ears ring.
