The elevator doors chimed open, and Fiona stepped out, her shoulders slumping. She’d had a terrible day at work, and the last thing she needed was this. A friendly message from Ben, her online travel buddy, had just popped up. He'd seen her at the supermarket. She’d been enjoying a break from his virtual companionship.

She started walking down the hallway, her footsteps echoing in the quiet space. The idea of small talk and making polite conversation was exhausting, overwhelming.
