Sarah slammed the door to the lab a bit harder than necessary. Her stomach churned. Dr. Ramirez was supposed to be here, guiding her through the final stages of her research. He was the only one who truly understood the complexities. Now, his office door was locked, a hastily scrawled sign reading "Retired. Thanks for the memories!" tacked to it. Her jaw clenched. She knew she should be happy for him, but the knot in her chest wouldn't loosen. She kicked a stray beaker, the glass clinking ominously against the tile floor.
