The band’s rendition of "I Got You Babe" was a personal affront to everything Daniel believed in. He watched as Chloe, his ex, moved effortlessly through the crowd, laughing at something the best man had said. Each smile felt like a slap in the face.

He found himself tapping his foot relentlessly. The dance floor, packed with whirling couples, seemed to mock his solitude. He wished, with a desperate longing, that he hadn't agreed to come. He was being made to feel as though he was a sideshow at his own expense.

He needed air, he realized. He needed to get away from the forced merriment, from the echoes of their shared past that now felt like a cruel joke.

He slipped towards the patio door. The cold night air was a welcome relief.
