The slow dance was a torture. Every embrace, every swaying couple, felt like a deliberate act of cruelty. Then he saw her. Across the dance floor, laughing with a new man, her face lit up.

The world seemed to shrink, the music became a blur, and a bitter taste filled his mouth. He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to do something drastic, to shatter the illusion of her happiness. He fumbled for his glass of water, spilling some down his shirt.

He stood there, frozen. He was so far from being okay.

He took a deep breath.

He needed to leave.
